Logo Design and Corporate Branding

There is an overwhelming push towards social media, corporate branding and logo’s these days. But what is the inspiration behind a company visually? Who, for instance, suggested that McDonalds should be ‘The Golden Arches’, why is Adidas three diagonal parallel bars? There are too many to go through!
