We’ve written several blogs on interviewing and telephone interviews, from How to Nail a Phone Interview to Buzzwords you need to know, and I’ve come across another “Telephone Interview Tips” List from Forbes.com.
Some points that the article makes such as standing up while you take the call, I think can be left up to the individual, but there are some excellent advantages that can be had from a telephone interview rather than a face-to-face.
1. You can take notes. I know after an interview I have run to my car to jot down everything that happened so I don’t forget! It’s also really helpful when you’re giving feedback to your recruitment consultant.
2. You can refer to supporting documents. The Forbes article makes a great suggestion that you write down 5 stories that will show off different skills, whether they be management, conflict resolution etc. You don’t have to wrack your brain for your chosen story when the related question is asked – it’s there in front of you!
3. Convenient. Almost all (if not all) of our candidates taking phone interviews are in a different timezone to the client. Therefore, it’s highly possible that your phone call will take place when you’re in the comfort of your own home, in your comfy clothes (if you wish) and you won’t need to take time off from your current job.
Just a couple of caveats to bear in mind as well when you are on the phone, you can’t see their facial expressions and reactions to your answers, so make an effort to keep your answers succinct and try not to ramble on! Additionally, with overseas calls there can sometimes be a delay, so take your time and be patient, you don’t want to interrupt the interviewer.
