Batabano is an annual event held in the Cayman Islands in May.

The Rotary Club launched the Batabano Carnival in 1984 and it continues to grow in popularity, as everyone joins in the street parades, floats and prize giveaways. The celebration is a filled with music and brightly colored costumes reflecting the creativity of the islanders.  The colors are meant to reflect the surrounding landscape and the music expresses the soulful rhythm carried through the Caymans.

The name Batabano actually means turtle tracks. The turtle is an important symbol of success for Caymanians especially as they have a reputation for being the best turtle fishermen in the region. In fact Christopher Columbus named the islands “Las Tortugas” because of the giant turtles he came across when he discovered the sister islands.

Every year communities from all districts come together to speak up about social issues. It is not just a huge celebration it is a pray for a prosperous year ahead.

This year’s event is taking place on Saturday 28th May – see you at the carnival.
