Location: Shanghai is situated on China's Eastern Coast

Description: it is made up of a peninsula, China's second largest island - Chongming, and several smaller islands. The main city is divide by the river Huangpu and has the older part, Puxi, on one side and the newly developed Pudong area, containing the financial district - Luijiazui, on the other.

Climate: Sub-tropical with 4 distiinct season and is invariably humid. Temperatures range dramtaically from highs in the 30s C in the summer to below freezing in the winter.

Population: 2010 census figures put the population at 22,210,000 people.

Official Languages: Mandarin

Government: A dual-party government system similar to the rest of China. The Mayor of Shanghai is the city's highest ranking official.

Currency: Chinese Yuan (also known as Renminbi, rmb for short)

Income Tax: Dependent on tax bracket.
