Overview
Hong Kong has been ranked as the world's freest economy for the last thirteen years by the Index of Economic Freedom. This highly capitalist economy is a result of low taxation, a free market and the Government of Hong Kong's laissez-faire approach. Hong Kong's culture is based on a union of Eastern and Western influences; a concept that is reinforced with the official languages including both Cantonese and English. The cityscape of Hong Kong is filled with modern buildings and is home to four of the world's 15 tallest skyscrapers. The world's most exclusive fashion boutiques are all located in Hong Kong and shopping is a very popular pastime. Hong Kong also has an extremely active night life which is fuelled by countless restaurants, bars and night clubs.

Description: 1,092 sq km - After being occupied by the UK in 1841, Hong Kong was formally given up by China the following year. In an agreement signed by China and the UK, Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China in July 1997. In this agreement, China has promised that Hong Kong will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all areas except foreign affairs and defence.
