Working In Hong Kong

Overview: The international financial community has a strong presence in Hong Kong. Many multi-national and local companies have their head offices in Hong Kong and 133 licensed banks, 121 of which are foreign-owned, are also located there. The Government firmly believes in ‘maximum support and minimum intervention' and aims to provide the most business-friendly conditions possible. Hong Kong's financial markets have a high degree of liquidity and operate under transparent and effective international regulations. Ease of entry for overseas professionals and a highly educated workforce also contribute to the development of the financial markets. Hong Kong's economy benefits from its favourable geographic location which bridges the time gap between Europe and North America. Strong ties with the Mainland and other economies in Southeast Asia as well as good communications with the rest of the world have helped Hong Kong to become an important, international financial centre.

Work Permits: All non-Hong Kong residents wanting to work in Hong Kong will require a work permit. Prior to an employee arriving in Hong Kong, the prospective employer must apply to the government for a work permit on the employee's behalf, after first proving that no suitably qualified citizens are available to fill the position. The majority of permits are valid for 6 months or more. Obtaining a work permit is normally something of a formality for qualified professionals. Everyone who enters and is permitted to stay in Hong Kong for more than 180 days, is required to register for a Hong Kong identity card that they are required to carry at all times.
